What Is The Best Entry-Level Surfboard For Beginners? - Beachin Surf

What is the best surfboard for a beginner surfer? Is it a small board that’s easy to carry around or is it a large board that floats on the water more easily? Well, if you have decided to try out surfing as a new hobby or have already taken a few surfing lessons, it’s crucial that you learn some tips when shopping for your first board.

You may assume that it’s as easy as asking the sales rep at your local surf shop for recommendations, but it pays to do a bit of research first.

Surfboards 101

The law of floatation applies extensively when it comes to surfboards. If you are not familiar with this law, then pay close attention. A floating object (surfboard) displaces a weight of fluid (sea water) equivalent to its own volume.

This basically means that every surfboard must be designed to displace a weight of fluid, or in this case weight of water, that’s at least equal to its own volume.

Volume

With that said, the best entry-level surfboard is one that is able to displace more water compared to its weight or volume. Such a board will float better in water and make it easier for a beginner surfer to catch and ride waves.

So, when shopping for an entry-level surfboard, always go for boards with larger volumes and surface areas.

Durability

You should also consider the durability rating of a board if you are an entry-level or beginner surfer. This is crucial because most beginners and non-pros are prone to damaging their boards.

In order to avoid buying a surfboard every few weeks, go for boards with a high durability rating.

Entry-Level Surfboards For Beginners

  1. Foam Surfboards

Foam surfboards measure anywhere from 6 to 8 feet and are perfect for beginners. Also referred to as foamies, these surfboards are excellent for people who are completely new to surfing or in their early stages of learning.

Pros:

  • They can easily catch waves.
  • Can be used on white water.
  • They are soft to touch – in case you get hit by your board while surfing.

Cons:

  • Not very responsive and therefore not suitable for professional surfing.
  • Quite Heavy
  1. Longboards

Longboards are also widely considered as entry level or intermediate surfboards. These boards are recommended for early surfing lessons. They are excellent for learning basic surfing fundamentals like paddling and white water surfing.

These surfboards are typically made from fibreglass or epoxy materials which are light and durable. Overall, longboards are excellent surfboards for all types of surfers.

Pros:

  • Can be used to surf big waves.
  • Easier and faster to manoeuvre than foam boards.
  • Great resale value if you do decide to sell yours.
  • Can be used by both beginners and pros.

Cons:

  • Extra-large longboards may not fit in most vehicles.
  • Can be slightly heavy and bulky.
  • They are hard and can easily hurt you.

  1. Minimals

Minimals are excellent for surfers who have grasped the fundamentals of surfing, and wish to progress to more advanced stages. They come in a wide range of sizes which means that both kids and adults can enjoy them.

Pros:

  • Small in size so they are easy to carry around.
  • Can easily fit them in your car.
  • Perfect for casual paddling and technique training.

Cons:

  • Slower than other surfboards.
  • Can limit a surfer to small waves.
  • Not very soft.
